Together toward net zero

Wolseley

A healthy environment and healthy climate are always a priority for Wolseley constituents. This summer I had many conversations on the doorstep, under skies heavy with wildfire smoke. Parents shared their worries about the kind of world their kids will grow up in. Many folks simply wanted reassurance that our government is taking steps to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions while we focus on growing the economy.

During our first two years in government, we partnered with Indigenous nations to preserve the Seal River watershed, protecting hunting and fishing traditions for generations to come. We launched the Manitoba Affordable Home Energy program to help families lower their bills. We introduced the Manitoba Electric Vehicle rebate, making it easier to switch to cleaner transportation. In March 2025, we made all provincial parks free for one year, so that everyone can enjoy nature without added cost. We are also working with the federal government to support a feasibility study on a national marine conservation area in western Hudson Bay to balance nature, culture, and economic opportunities.

This month, we’ve taken another big step. Under the leadership of Mike Moyes, minister of environment and climate, our government has released a plan to get Manitoba to net-zero emissions by 2050. The plan is guided by the Anishinaabe teaching of manoominikenzhii, the spirit of the wild rice. Achieving net zero is about sustaining life across generations and this plan is an invitation for Manitobans from all walks of life to work together in a spirit of gratitude and responsibility.

We are building a future where Manitoba energy is cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable while supporting innovation and making sure skilled workers are ready and good family-supporting jobs are available in the emerging low-carbon economy.

The plan lays out practical actions — collaborating with Indigenous nations on renewable power, working alongside the agriculture sector to cut emissions, expanding active transportation routes and public transportation. We are building more EV charging stations, supporting clean heating options such as heat pumps and geothermal, and providing targets and supports to help municipalities, remote communities, schools, hospitals and post-secondary institutions reduce emissions.

This plan wasn’t written behind closed doors. It was shaped by you — by over 500 survey responses, 50 stakeholder submissions, and countless community conversations. The same energy and activism I see every day in Wolseley is what brought this roadmap to life. Our expert advisory council and climate change cabinet committee will ensure accountability.
