2025 will be remembered as one of Manitoba’s most challenging years.

Wildfires arrived early and fiercely, displacing families and blanketing communities in smoke. At the same time, a rapidly escalating trade war disrupted supply chains and drove up prices for groceries and farm equipment, straining households and businesses already stretched thin. It was a year that tested Manitoba’s resilience, forcing communities to lean on one another in new ways.

Just as the province braced for these challenges, our team faced a heartbreaking loss – the passing of Nello Altomare. His death cast a shadow over classrooms, community centres, and legislative halls. For many, Nello wasn’t just an MLA – he was a lifelong educator, mentor, and champion for children whose voices too often go unheard. Personally, I would never have seen myself becoming an MLA without his steady encouragement.

Nello’s life was led by a simple truth – when you invest in youth, you invest in the future. I am forever grateful to have been one of the many he invested in.

In the months following his passing, Manitobans began speaking of his contributions in a new way. What many now call ‘Nello’s Law’ reflects his belief that access to nutritious food is a fundamental right – and a foundation of academic success, mental health, and well-being. He understood that when students have the energy they need, they’re better prepared to reach their full potential.

This year, more than 30 million meals and snacks were served to students across the province – an achievement reflecting our government’s commitment to ensuring every child has the nourishment they need to thrive. Through the Manitoba universal school nutrition program, an average of 93,431 students accessed healthy food, a 51 per cent increase from the previous year.

With a $30-million investment, our government expanded access to nutrition programs in 632 public schools, including breakfast, lunch, and snack options. Lunch programs grew by 50 per cent, while milk programs increased by 85 per cent, showing how vital these supports have become for families navigating uncertainty.

Teachers and parents continue to share how these programs are making a difference. When children start the day with a healthy breakfast or have snacks throughout the day, they are more engaged, confident, and ready to learn.

As your MLA for Radisson, I am proud to champion initiatives that give young Manitobans their best footing for the world ahead. If you have ideas or feedback on how we can keep building a healthier future for Manitobans of all walks of life, I want to hear from you. Together, we’re proving that when we invest in our children, we invest in the future – and we honour the enduring legacy of Nello Altomare.
