Bulldog sports have been going strong since the beginning of September here at Collège Churchill High School. Our phys-ed department just recently hosted first-round games in the AAAA provincial junior varsity girls volleyball championship tournament and we were greatly impressed by the calibre of Grade 9 and10 volleyball played by École secondaire Oak Park High School, J.H. Bruns Collegiate, Collège Jeane Sauvé and Sturgeon Heights Collegiate.

Even more impressive this volleyball season was the Churchill Bulldogs varsity girls team who have won the AAA Winnipeg School Division championship for the fifth year in a row. This year, the girls, led by Grade 12 veterans Sydney Holton and Chita Cook, defeated the St. John’s Tigers in an intense game in front of a raucous crowd. Their final journey was the provincial tournament, held Nov. 27-29 in Winnipeg, where they were unfortunately eliminated in a close game on the Friday night.

The junior high girls volleyball squad had an overall positive regular season according to Coach Boila. They won their first-round playoff game convincingly over River Heights, two sets to one in a strong showing, and then narrowly lost to Stanley Knowles in the quarter-final game.

Soccer has become an all-year sport, with indoor and outdoor seasons at all levels from grades 7-12, with boys and girls teams continuously playing in lunch time and after school games.

The Bulldogs football team also had a great season in the AAA division. Although it finished with a disappointing loss in the semi-final to the eventual champion St. Norbert Celtics, the Bulldogs, led by Grade 12 veterans Kadin Hampton, Rocco Cabral and Kyran Broughton, had a regular season record of six wins and one loss to finish in first place in their division; something a Bulldogs Football team hasn’t done for many years. There were many great highlights to the season, one being the final game of the regular season, in which the Dawgs defeated the Fort Frances Muskies to take over first place.

Basketball will be the next big thing here at Churchill with the varsity boys team looking very promising on paper, according to Coach Meyer. A large number of boys from grades 7 through 12 are looking to play basketball this season and we are still looking for coaches to help with all these teams. This will be the first year post-COVID in which the school will have teams at every possible age group. Please reach out to the school if you are a basketball coach looking to help out.

Thanks to all the coaches who give their time and make these teams possible; their time helps give these student athletes unforgettable high school experiences that last a lifetime.
