Happy new year, St. Vital!

I hope 2026 is off to a positive and healthy start for you and your families. As we settle into a new year, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible community and its optimism as we look ahead.

In the coming February weeks, I look forward to visiting classrooms across St. Vital during I Love to Read Month to share stories and connect with students. Reading opens doors to imagination, learning, and confidence, and it’s always a joy to see that excitement firsthand. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the teachers and administrators who work tirelessly every day to support our students. Your dedication does not go unnoticed; our community is stronger because of you.

One way we continue to support our schools is through annual increases in education funding. In the two years since being elected, we’ve increased education funding by almost 10 per cent, an increase that outpaces inflation over that same period, because we know that investing in our children is an investment in our future.

We also know that supporting education means supporting educators. That’s why our NDP government is focused on recruiting and retaining teachers and staff across the province. Since forming government, we have hired over 800 new teachers. These investments mean more supports in classrooms, more individual attention for students, and better learning outcomes overall. When we invest in students and educators, we invest in Manitoba’s future.

Kids learn best when they’re well-fed and well-nourished. Through our universal school nutrition program in every school division across Manitoba, we are ensuring that no child goes hungry at school. The program has been a major success, feeding an average of 93,431 students daily. With reliable access to nutritious food, students can focus, learn, and reach their full potential.

Of course, all this good work only happens when students feel safe at school. We’re prioritizing safety by investing $500,000 to support safety, and requiring all schools to review their controlled access policies, giving families greater peace of mind.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that our free income tax clinic will continue this year for qualified St. Vital constituents. Running from March 1 to April 30, the tax program is made possible by the assistance of dedicated, local expert volunteers.
