Spring season is budget season

Spring is here. And with it comes a new provincial budget. Each year, your provincial government engages in budget planning through consultations with Manitobans from across the province. We heard loud and clear that good jobs, lower costs, and better health care are the top priorities for Manitobans.
Rising costs have made everyday life more challenging, which is why our NDP government’s focus in Budget 2026 was on helping Manitobans keep more money in their pockets while building a solid foundation for the future.
A key part of this work is lowering everyday costs. Beginning July 1, we will remove the PST on all food sold in grocery stores. We are also addressing predatory pricing practices by large grocery chains, increasing the homeowners and renters affordability tax credit, while continuing the permanent gas tax relief.

Strengthening our public health-care system by repairing the cuts and closures that the previous Progressive Conservative government imposed on Manitobans continues to be a focus of our work. That’s why this budget includes $22.1 million to restore Heart Care Manitoba as the Cardiac Centre of Excellence at St. Boniface Hospital, $1.2 million to perform 3,250 additional MRIs, and $1.7 million to deliver 200 more hip and knee surgeries.
We are also investing $31.9 million for the new emergency room at Victoria Hospital, $13.6 million for a new mental health zone at the Health Sciences Centre to ease emergency room pressures, and $5.2 million for the new Manitoba Menopause Clinic.
2026 also makes important investments in families like free child care for low-income families and free transit for kids and youth. These initiatives are about easing financial pressures and creating opportunities so everyone can thrive.
As important as these investments are, so are the folks who keep our community connected. Joining your local residents group or association is a wonderful way to stay informed, have a voice in your community, and support important work year-round.
