Time to reflect on the past, start a new adventure

River Heights-Fort Garry

It’s always been clear to me why River Heights-Fort Garry is one of the most beloved and popular wards in the city — it’s the people.

I am deeply humbled to have earned the dedicated support of so many of your over the past 17 years as your city councillor. It has allowed me to represent you and the other residents of our ward to make our community and city a better place.

The importance of public service and giving back has been a core belief in my family for as long as I can remember. I have been proud to follow in the footsteps of my uncle David, a school trustee, city councillor and Member of Parliament from 1945-88 and father, Lionel, who was a school trustee from 1988-98. Combined, there has been an Orlikow in elected office in Winnipeg for nearly 80 consecutive years.

Personally, it has truly been an honour serving in political life for nearly three decades, first as a school trustee for the Winnipeg School Division and then as your city councillor.

But now it’s time for a new adventure. It is with my deep respect and appreciation for you that I am sharing that I will not be seeking re-election during the 2026 municipal election in October.

As I prepare to close this impactful chapter of my life, I’m incredibly proud at what we have accomplished together during my time representing our vast and unique neighbourhoods.

With the support of many councils, colleagues and residents like you, we have led and pushed for the improvements to River Heights-Fort Garry over the years, including:

• Building the Waverley underpass and upgrading all major roads in the ward with plans to complete Kenaston in the future;

• Leading the build of the Bill and Helen Library, which has become one of the most popular libraries in Winnipeg;

• Ensuring major funding increases to protect and grow Winnipeg’s tree canopy;

• Investing in community centres to ensure they can grow and continue providing services to the area, including adding three spray pads and replacing/repairing multiple play structures throughout the ward;

• Modernizing Bus Rapid Transit to improve connectivity for riders;

• Moving and building a new Brenda Leipsic Dog Park; and

• Dedicating money for new and redeveloped active transportation trails.

All this progress is because you trusted me enough to share your priorities and what matters to you and your families over the years. Being your representative at city council and making real, lasting change for those who call our ward home has been honour of my life.

I could not have done any of it without your support. Thank you for everything.
