Some of our favourite area breakfast spots

For my husband and I, one of the delights of life is going for breakfast at different locations around Winnipeg.

Although there are many tempting venues, three The Sou’wester area stand out. Each has its own appeal. Service is pleasant and efficient at all of them.

Our local Smitty’s, about a 10-minute walk from home, is the place to be once a month when  any of our neighbours in our condo complex gather at 9 a.m. in the back room.

Some choose the breakfast special which, besides being very economical, offers a choice of items. By far, though, the draw for me is not the food or location, but the conversation with neighbours.

The second location is The Park Café in Assiniboine Park. Until recently, we’d only had experienced it as a lunch destination, until our next-door neighbours suggested we all go for breakfast.

Yes, we enjoyed good conversation. Yes there were a number of breakfast  options available. However, the main appeal for me was its setting overlooking the duck pond.

The third eatery is a small café in Smartpark at One Research Road at the University of Manitoba. It seems to be an unknown gem. This is no doubt because there is no visible signage until you are in the visitors’ parking lot.

The restaurant has always been managed by Stella’s, and its original name was Edna Fedya. Now it’s called Edna’s Café. I preferred the fun of saying we were going to Edna Fedya’s.  We have taken friends and visiting family members, including seven grandchildren, for a meal. Three of the grandchildren coined the saying, “If Grandma didn’t feed ya, Edna Fedya.”

It’s only a five-minute drive from home so the location is good. Conversation always flows. But for me, the food is the chief reason for coming. Although there’s a bit of a wait after you’ve ordered, it is well worth it.

I enjoy the Greek omelette or the huevos rancheros. After eating either, I don’t want lunch, not even a late lunch or afternoon snack.

We have other special places, but these three sum up our reasons for going out for breakfast: conversation, location, excellent food.
