Riel CC gives out grants for high school scholarships

The most recent Riel community committee meeting was held Feb. 23, when items on the agenda included a number of per capita grant requests, and a recommendation for a report about the feasibility of a new sidewalk.

• The committee appointed Karen Bock and Robin Rook-Hanke to the Riel library advisory committee for a two-year term, which is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2023.

• The committee approved a per capita grant for $2,525 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation to Terrence Madhosingh to help with the cost of an outdoor ice rink in Aldgate Park in south St. Vital. The grant will be used to help with the construction and maintenance of the rink, and insurance costs, officials say.

• The committee approved a per capita grant for $1,000 — $250 from the St. Boniface ward allocation, $500 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation, and $250 from the St. Vital ward allocation — to the Afro Caribbean Association of Manitoba to help with the cost of a scholarship. According to documents available at winnipeg.ca, the Black History Month-related scholarship will be presented to a youth in the community who’s pursuing post-secondary education at the association’s annual harambee/cultural night in March.

• The committee approved a per capita grant for $500 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation to St. Norbert Arts Centre to help with the cost of a 30th anniversary celebration, the opening of the Gerry Atwell Theatre, the renaming of its gallery, and the opening of a garden pathway.

• The committee recommended to the standing policy committee on infrastructure renewal and public works that the public service report back with a cost estimate and design proposal for a new sidewalk on Maginot Street between Speers Road and the Louis Riel Arts and Technology Centre.

• The committee approved per capita grants for $500 to Dakota Collegiate, Glenlawn Collegiate, Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, and Centre scolaire Léo-Rémillard to help with the cost of a scholarship. In each case, the grants were jointly funded by $250 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation, and $250 from the St. Vital ward allocation. The committee also approved per capita grants of $250 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation to Fort Richmond Collegiate and Collège St. Norbert Collegiate to help with the cost of scholarships.
