The Aug. 30 Riel community committee meeting turned out to be a busy one.
The committee adjourned a decision about a zoning agreement amendment and conditional use at River Park Village at 1500 Dakota St. until its Nov. 14 meeting. Several businesses are located at the centre, located at the southwest corner of Dakota Street and Warde Avenue, which is anchored by Sobeys and includes other retail units. It serves the communities of River Park South and Dakota Crossing. The application by Nejmark Architect includes the proposed construction of three new, one-storey commercial buildings on the site, which would collectively include two outdoor patios and two drive-throughs.
A number of local residents have voiced different concerns about the proposed development, such as safety and security. At the meeting, Coun. Markus Chambers (St. Norbert-Seine River) said the developer, Qualico, hasn’t adequately consulted with the community and said conversations must to be had before things proceed.
The current No. 15 fire station in Windsor Park, pictured here, will be consolidated with the No. 3 station in St. Boniface to create a larger station in line with the demands of modern-day firefighting.
“We’re going to defer the motion so you can meet with the community and come up with proper solutions and address the concerns of the community,” Chambers said.
The committee concurred with the public service and made recommendations to the executive policy committee regarding the rezoning of 1081 Autumnwood Dr. and 955 Cottonwood Rd. in Windsor Park. This area encompasses the site of the current No. 15 fire station and the former Windsor Park Library building. The ongoing plan is to consolidate No. 15 station and No. 3 station (337 Des Meurons St.) to create a larger station in line with the demands of modern-day firefighting.
At the meeting, Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) said he was pleased to see the plan move ahead and that it was time to something with the land, noting the design incorporates “geothermal for environmental consideration.”
Some of the other items on the agenda included the following:
• The committee approved a per capita grant for $300 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation to Genevieve Atnip on behalf of MorningChat Neighbourhood Association to assist with the cost of a neighbourhood barbecue that was held on Sept. 10;
• Plan approval was granted for properties at 107 Burning Glass Rd. in Sage Creek, 918 Elizabeth Rd. in Windsor Park, and 166 Provencher Blvd. in St. Boniface;
• The committee approved the honorary street name Voie Denis Rémillard. According to documents available at winnipeg.ca, Carriere Avenue between Des Meurons Street and St. Mary’s Road will designated with the honorary street name for a period not exceeding five years commencing on the date of the installation of the street signs and/or sign toppers. The application fee and signage costs will be funded via the St. Boniface ward allowance. Rémillard, who died in January, was the co-founder of Jardins St. Léon Gardens.
• The committee recommended tthat the public service report back on rezoning City of Winnipeg-owned residential land at the southeast corner of Dufresne Avenue and Doucet Street into park property.
