After a three year hiatus, Elmwood Winter Fun Day is back.

The free, family friendly event will return to Clara Hughes Recreation Park (281 Henderson Hwy.) on Sat., Feb. 11. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., folks are invited to bundle up and come on down for a long list of activities.

“It gives people in the community, and particularly children, an opportunity to have a positive winter experience, whether that’s using the slides, skating, milk jug curling,” said Robert Fabbri, buildings and grounds manager for Bronx Park Community Centre, which manages the recreation park on the site of former Kelvin Community Centre. “We’ll have a horse-drawn sleigh ride again, which is a big hit. And of course, everybody’s favourite — hotdogs and hot chocolate.”

Folks who would like a hot drink are asked to bring their own mug, cup, or tumbler.

“It’s at no cost to anybody attending,” Fabbri said. “It’s quite a positive experience for the people who take the time to show up.”

“People want to get back out again and get circulating again,” facility manager Joanne Fondeur said. “Our volunteers are coming forward again, which is great. We’re just hoping the weather co-operates.”

“This will be our seventh year, and throughout the previous six we’ve had optimum weather and challenging weather conditions,” Fabbri added. “It’s winter in Winnipeg, right? You take it a day at a time. If you get a good day, great. If not, you do your best to make it a good situation.”

So that anyone from the community can take part in the activities, community members have donated hand-knit mittens, toques, and scarves again this year.

“We’ve collected some hockey practice jerseys, so we’re able to give them out,” Fondeur said. “We’ve got helmets and skates for the kids who want to skate who don’t have equipment to use. We’re hoping to get a skating instructor and someone with hockey experience to help get the kids on the ice and going with that.”

The event is the work of a number of community organizations. Along with Bronx Park Community Centre, the Glenelm Neighbourhood Association, Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, the Elmwood Community Resource Centre, and the Columbia Alliance in Manitoba Inc. all took part in organizing the event. Local businesses like JC’s Tacos and More and FreshCo on Regent also contributed.

“It takes a committee of dedicated volunteers to get this off the ground,” Fabbri said. “What we’re then able to do is assign different tasks to different people so that it all comes together.”

“Everything’s free,” Fondeur added. “Dress warm, come on out and have fun. Experience a winter playland in a small area, so you don’t have to go far.”
