The all-encompassing idea of community helping community is at the heart of an upcoming conference intended to empower families.
Inspire Community Outreach is preparing to hold its annual Empowered Families Conference in partnership with Seven Oaks School Division, and other collaborators.
The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Maples Collegiate (1330 Jefferson Ave.) The all-day conference will be held both in-person and virtually, and child care will be available.

Angela Taylor, Inspire Community Outreach’s founder and CEO, is pictured here during a training presentation. Along with several partners, Inspire will hold its annual Empowered Families Conference on Feb. 25.
It’s aimed at caregivers of children living with disabilities and will offer educational seminars by local professionals on topics chosen by families, meaning they will be tailored to their target audiences. Topics will include complex and challenging behaviours, aggression, positive parenting for sensitive kids, schooling, and advocacy.
“We’ll have four amazing speakers, who will be talking on topics chosen by the community,” said Angela Taylor, Inspire Community Outreach’s founder and CEO. “The whole year before the conference comes up, we’re talking to families and these topics continue to come up over and over again.”
Taylor, who lives in Southdale, said it’s crucial to be able to offer these community supports and make them as accessible as possible to families. Inspire supports families, who — in turn — are trying to help family members navigating mental health issues, who are on the autism spectrum, or coping with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to name but three.
“For me, it’s about the community having a sense of belonging and acceptance and about being heard. How can we feed the needs of the community? Let’s try and put all this into one day, as families know what they need,” Taylor said.
As well as Seven Oaks School Division, Inspire has partnered with Real Canadian Superstore, Starbucks, Reliable Mobility and Huddle NorWest for the event.

There is no cost for caregivers to attend the conference, but donations will be gratefully received.
