Construction begins on $52-million St. Vital Bridge rehab project

Construction on St. Vital Bridge has begun.
The City of Winnipeg has advised residents and motorists to expect major traffic delays on Dunkirk Drive owing to construction work on St. Vital Bridge.
Osborne Street and Dunkirk Drive from Jubilee Avenue to south of the Kingston Row access roads are currently reduced to one lane in each direction. During the first phase of work, which began on March 1, construction will be taking place on the southbound portion of the bridge structure, and pedestrian access is available only on the east side of the bridge.

Traffic is expected to be affected in different ways next year. When finished, the project will significantly improve navigating the bridge for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, as well as enhance the look and feel on and around the bridge, officials say.
When construction is completed next year, the speed limit on Dunkirk Drive from Clare Avenue where it meets Glenview Avenue will be reduced to 60 km/h from 70 km/h.
During construction, Dunkirk Drive will be a designated construction zone with the speed limit reduced to 50 km/h.
Motorists are advised to consider alternate routes such as St. Mary’s Road or Pembina Highway.
