The most recent Riel community committee meeting was held on March 21, when a number of items on the agenda were approved.

The committee approved an application for land dedication reserve funding of $30,369 (from the St. Norbert-Seine River allocation) to the St. Norbert Foundation to help with the cost of the community garden fence project, subject to a number of conditions.

The committee approved plans for 1530 Warde Ave. in the St. Vital ward. The proposed development is described as a five-storey, mixed-use building that will include 110 residential units and five commercial units on the ground floor. The plan also includes a total of 150 parking stalls and 22 bicycle parking stalls.

The committee approved plans for 1500 Dakota St. in the St. Norbert-Seine River ward, with an amendment that the blueprints are revised to include several more trees. The 6.4-acre site is home to the River Park Village Shopping Centre, which includes Sobeys as an anchor retailer. The plans include the construction of three one-storey commercial that will be located at the site, including a Dollarama store. The applicant, Landmark Planning & Design Inc., is proposing to maintain the existing commercial mall. The plans include a total of 322 parking stalls and 38 bicycle parking stalls.

The committee approved a number of per capita grants, including: $500 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward to the Winnipeg Chinese Senior Association to help with cost of a healthy eating program; $500 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward to Cosmos Cricket Club to help with the cost of buying cricket equipment and facility rentals; $1,500 — $500 from each of the three south Winnipeg wards — to Sikh Heritage Manitoba to help with the cost of a number of events that will be held in April as part of Sikh Heritage Month; $500 from the St. Vital ward allowance to Grant Lindgren on behalf of Avery Lindgren of the Para Storm Swim Club to help with the cost of competing at the 2023 World Dwarf Games; and a $250 from the St. Vital ward to Dakota Collegiate’s student leadership committee to help with the cost of running a Relay for Life event.

Following public hearings, the committee concurred with the public service in rejecting a combined subdivision, rezoning and variance application for a proposed infill development at 166 Sadler Ave. The applicant, represented by John Wintrup, sought to consolidate two lots into one and rezone the property as residential multifamily small, in order to build six dwelling units on the property. Five neighbours registered in opposition to the proposal.

Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) agreed with the public service that the density was too much, especially when compared to neighbouring lots of similar size.

“The lot across the street was developed at three units,” he said. “I think that’s more in keeping with the neighbourhood.”

The committee did approve demolition permits for buildings at 180 Creek Bend Rd. and 75 Macbell Rd.
