A Habitat for Humanity Manitoba initiative aims to build women up while also constructing affordable homes for local families.

Women Build empowers women to join together in a shared effort to help families who need a decent and affordable home.

Through this program, women from all walks of life band together to raise funds and build affordable homes for families to buy. As a result, Women Build introduces women to home construction and encourages them to take leadership roles in the project through mentorship and training.

In 2023, the Women Build committee and volunteers will be building their 20th sponsored home.

“The Women Build sponsored homes are located across Winnipeg. This year’s Women Build sponsored home will be at Habitat Manitoba’s latest development, situated on three acres of land on Pandora Avenue West in Transcona,” said Christa Mariash, vice-president of marketing, communications and philanthropy.

“It will be a new development with 11 blocks of five townhouses each, for a total of 55 new homes. The project will house approximately 275 people, including 175 children. These homes will be exceptionally energy efficient with no source of carbon in the homes.”

The funds needed to construct Women Build homes are raised by a committee of women who fundraise all year long through various events and campaigns — and then they come together to work on building the home, Mariash added.

On Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m., a fundraising event will take place on the second floor of the South Osborne Legion, located at 426 Osborne St. Tickets cost $30 for rush seating or $165 for a reserved table for six.

“Women Build is excited to host its second ‘What’s the Price?’ event, the Women Build committee’s take on The Price is Right, where lucky contestants will have their pricing knowledge challenged,” Mariash said.

“Each ticket holder is entered in the contestant draw for the opportunity to be part of the pricing challenge panel, with the winner moving on to a fun-filled game with the opportunity to win more prizes. Each additional $5 donation made during the event will increase your entries and chances to hear ‘Come on down, you are the next contestant.’”
