Peg City Car Co-op is making a big splash throughout the central part of the city.
On May 17, the car-sharing co-operative launched its new “free floating” car-share program with an event at City Hall.
In the coming weeks, members can book one of 35 new “FLO” vehicles throughout the downtown core and beyond for short trips with a few clicks on a smartphone.
“The introduction of one-way car-sharing is a game-changer for Winnipeg,” CEO Philip Mikulec said in a statement.
“Peg City Car Co-op is now one of only two car-sharing companies in Canada that offer both free-floating and round-trip car-sharing. We appreciate the City of Winnipeg’s efforts to work with us to make FLO cars possible. Peg City is proud to contribute to a more sustainable future for our city.”
“Peg City Car Co-op is a vital part of Winnipeg’s active transportation strategy. It was our pleasure to support the new free-floating service through on-street parking,” deputy mayor Janice Lukes added.
“Congratulations to Peg City Car Co-op — we applaud their commitment to sustainability.”
FLO cars can be booked up to 30 minutes in advance of a trip. They can also be left anywhere it is legal to park within the designated core neighbourhoods (River Heights, Crescentwood, Corydon, Riverview, Lord Roberts, Norwood, St. Boniface, River-Osborne, West Broadway, Wolseley, St. Matthews, and the West End), rather than returning booked cars to their respective stalls.
The new service goes live on June 7. There are also nine FLO drop-off spots grouped in clusters of three downtown and in the Exchange District.
Members can still book cars the same way they have since Peg City launched over a decade ago, paying a lower hourly rate for longer trips.
The new cars, however, provide members with more options when looking to make quick round- or one-way trips. In total, the co-op now has a fleet of over 130 shared vehicles.
