There’s lots more fun on the horizon at Dakota Community Centre.
The facility (1188 Dakota St.) is preparing to host its inaugural Family Fun Days event, which will span two days — Friday, Aug. 18 from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Lise Thiessen, special projects co-ordinator at the centre, said one of the main goals of the family fun days event is to bring people together again, in a community setting, after the restrictions of the pandemic.

One of the main goals of the upcoming family fun days event at Dakota Community Centre is to bring people together again, in a community setting, after the restrictions of the pandemic.
“We want to bring people back to the community centre, and we haven’t done a large-scale event for some time,” Thiessen said, noting the event should have something for all age groups. “This is about welcoming people back and getting the community together.”
The lineup of activities includes live entertainment, inflatable bouncers, carnival games, and face painting. There will also be free classes, an outdoor market, food trucks, and beer gardens. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a family movie night on the Friday and a fireworks display on the Saturday.
For those with an appetite for some friendly competition, there will be a beach volleyball tournament on both days and a dodgeball tournament on the Saturday. Everyone is welcome to sign up and take part.
As the centre’s campus continues to expand and its reach stretches beyond southeast Winnipeg, Thiessen said DCC continues to play an important role in the community.
“The campus is busy all the time, which tells us there’s a need,” she said. “We’re playing a great role in the community.”
Thiessen noted there’s another ice rink on the horizon for the centre, and extensive upgrades to its ice plant were recently completed.
At the time of writing, the St. Vital-based centre was also preparing for its role as a volleyball and pickleball venue for the World Police & Fire Games.
