A key organizer of a south Winnipeg-based bowling league that debuted this summer said it was a big hit with participants.
Inspired by similar models in other provinces, members of the city’s lawn bowling community recently held B-Cubed — a combination of bowling, barbecues and beverages — in a league format. B-Cubed can be described as a social activity that gives participants — in some cases — a chance to learn a new sport, while meeting new people and enjoying Manitoba’s summer evenings.
Paulette Abraham, a keen bowler and board member at Norwood Lawn Bowling Club, said 64 individuals signed up for the club’s inaugural tournament earlier this year, and there was also a number of names on a waiting list. To accommodate as many interested folks as possible, some came in as spares, and others joined the club.

The league was open to anyone 18 and older, and was held at Dakota Lawn Bowling Centre. Equipment was provided and instruction was also available, if required.
“It was great,” said Abraham, a St. Vital resident, adding she hopes B-Cubed will become an annual event in the years to come.
“We had people of all ages, which was also great. Everyone had so much fun, and said they were coming back next year.”
Abraham said some people registered for B-Cubed as teams, while other signed up as individuals.
“It was really lots of fun,” she said, noting some folks bowled a bit more competitively than others, while other donned costumes — all of which added to the experience for everyone. “We did relax the rules a bit, which was part of the whole idea.”
It would seem that B-Cubed contains the right mix of ingredients for a cross-section of participants to enjoy. Weather-wise, participants generally lucked out during the eight sessions that began on the first Wednesday in June, Abraham said, noting the club’s location next to Dakota Community Centre was also a factor, as “people in the centre’s parking lot would see us and come and talk to us, not least when there was music playing.”
Giving participants the chance to enjoy a hamburger or an adult beverage while learning a new sport and meeting new people didn’t hurt, either.
