Strike up the band!

Local singer-songwriter Jared Adams is set to release his sophomore record, Mystic Humanism, on Friday, March 15. The record, which has been in the works for some time now, is a culmination of years of work and musical exploration for the Crescentwood resident.

“It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun,” said Adams, 36. The record was recorded at Private Ear Recording by John Paul Peters in the fall of 2022. “A couple of the guys who play in my solo band played in our band in high school. We’ve been playing together for 15, 20 years. They’ve added more to the songs than I initially envisioned.”

Along with contributions from his four-piece band, the new record also includes performances by the horn section from Apollo Suns; violinist Eric Ross from Yes We Mystic; and Christy Taronno from Paper Machetes.

“It’s also a new direction for me musically,” said Adams, who performed and toured with the local indie band Colour by Numbers before striking out on his own. “Over the pandemic, I had a lot more time to play with synthesizers and drum machines. This one was more I’d start with a drum beat or a synth line, which isn’t the way I used to write. It’s definitely different than stuff I’ve written before.”

Mystic Humanism picks up where Adams’ solo debut, Tragic Nostalgia, also recorded by Peters at Private Ear and released in 2020, left off.

“They were sort of planned together,” said Adams, a Glenlawn Collegiate alumnus. “They’re kind of opposite in a way. Tragic Nostalgia was introspective, where this is my take at the world at-large. I like to call it my ‘hot takes on the world’ record, covering stuff like politics, AI, the digital world, climate change.”

Adams will celebrate the release of Mystic Humanism with a special show at the Handsome Daughter (61 Sherbrook St.) on Friday, March 29. Tickets to the show are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. Matlock and Annaxis will also perform as openers.

“I plan to bring out all the guest musicians who played live, some strings, some horns,” Adams said.
