The most recent Riel community committee meeting was held April 5.

During the public hearings, a combined rezoning (from C1 to C2) and variance application was approved for 744 St. Mary’s Rd., to allow for a three-storey, mixed-use commercial and residential building on site.

“This is on a major corridor. This is the kind of project we’ve been trying to encourage,” Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) said in support. “There isn’t a gravel lane, to the relief of all. So that’s positive.”

Several key organizers of the United Church in Meadowood’s Greening of UCiM campaign are pictured on March 25. From left: Julie Nash, Joy Bissoon, Erin Crawford and minister Caryn Douglas. On April 5, the Riel community committee recommended to the executive policy committee that land dedication reserve funding of $20,000 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation to the church for its geothermal greening project to be approved and certain criteria waived, as the public service recommended against approval.

A combined subdivision, rezoning and variance application at 366 Marion St., was also approved, allowing a for a mixed-use commercial and residential building, to include up to 127 residential units, many of them to be deemed affordable, with commercial space on the main floor. Nearly 75 people registered their opposition to the project.

“I think this is an excellent project. This is the most urban part of St. Boniface,” Coun. Matt Allard (St. Boniface) said in support. “Deeply affordable units are very much required right now.”

Finally, the committee approved a combined conditional use and variance application for 475 St. Anne’s Rd., to allow for three live-work units to be established on site.

One of the first items on the regular agenda was the prospective honorary street naming of Novavista Drive between Dakota Street and Polydore Road/Hawkins Crescent as Kaçaniku Way, which the committee approved in concurrence with the public service. According to documents available at winnipeg.ca, the move will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the end of war in Kosovo, which resulted in many refugees of Albanian descent settling in Winnipeg. Kaçaniku is a small city in southern Kosovo which was largely destroyed, officials said.

The committee also recommended to the executive policy committee that land dedication reserve funding of $20,000 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation be given to the United Church of Meadowood for its geothermal greening project. The public service had recommended against approval.

Similarly, the committee also recommended that land dedication reserve funding of $15,000 from the St. Norbert-Seine River ward allocation be granted to Ridgix Building Solutions for the Terrasse Boisjoli apartments landscaping project, despite not meeting certain criteria.

Per capita grants were approved for $2,500 – $500 from the St. Boniface Ward allocation and $2,000 from the St. Vital Ward allocation – to the Manitoba Opera Association to help with the cost of facilitating in-class opera programming hosted at Winnipeg schools until June; for $1,000 – $500 from the St. Norbert-River-Seine Ward allocation and $500.00 from the St. Vital Ward allocation – to the St. Vital Art Group to help with various operating costs; and $1,000 – $500 from the St. Boniface Ward allocation and $500 from the St. Vital Ward allocation – to the Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba (on behalf of the Windsor Park Nordic Centre) to help with the cost of maintenance of an accessible portable toilet for the winter season.
