The most recent Riel community committee was held May 27.

In the hearings portion of the meeting, the committee concurred with the recommendation of the public service and recommended to the standing policy committee on property and development that 1009 St. Mary’s Rd. — the site of St. Eugene Parish — be subdivided and rezoned. It also approved a conditional use “to allow the maintenance of a place of worship use on a reduced lot area” while also allowing for development of a multi-family development on another lot.

“The idea of developing on the site has been around for as long as I’ve been elected,” said Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) in support of the application, though he also noted reservations about the height of the proposed building.

On May 27, the Riel community committee approved a combined subdivision, rezoning, conditional use and variance application for 1009 St. Mary’s Rd. — the site of St. Eugene Parish — “to allow the maintenance of a place of worship use on a reduced lot area” and the development of a multifamily development.

“It’s a site that should be developed. It’s on a major corridor … It’s not out of keeping with what’s a bit further south. Maybe it’s a bit out of keeping with what you would see within 200 metres of this site, but the times, they are a-changing.”

The committee also approved a variance on the site. Four people registered in opposition to the proposal.

During the regular meeting, the committee approved land dedication reserve funding (St. Vital ward) for $20,000 to Dakota Collegiate’s Lancer parent committee to help with the cost of Murray Field Press box project, subject to a number of conditions. It also approved LDR funding for $2,500 to Paddle Manitoba to help with the cost of the Refurbish Paddling Centre Building Project at La Barriere Park, also subject to conditions.

The committee recommended that the standing policy committee on property and development direct the public service to report back on extending an existing lease agreement with the Winnipeg Rowing Club (20 Lyndale Dr.) for a 20-year term. The committee approved a per capita grant from the St. Norbert-Seine River Ward allocation to the Cosmos Cricket Club to help with the cost of hosting the Fort Richmond community cricket program.
