Local politicians and people from the community gathered at Adsum Park in The Maples on July 30 to officially open a new, 3,000-square-foot accessible spray pad and playground.

The $1.718 million project was funded with $400,000 from the federal Canada Community Building Fund, $545,000 from the provincial Building Sustainable Communitites program, $723,000 from the City of Winnipeg and $50,000 from the Maples Recreation Association.

On hand for the opening ceremony were (from left): Rachelle Schott, Kildonan-River East NDP MLA; JD Devgan, McPhillips NDP MLA; Minto Sandhu, Maples NDP MLA; Diljeet Brar, Burrows NDP MLA; Devi Sharma, Old Kildonan city councillor (at microphone); Kevin Lamoureux, Winnipeg North Liberal MP; Winnipeg mayor Scott Gillingham; Vivian Santos, Point Douglas city councillor; Bhagwant Muker, chair of the Maples Recreation Association, and Obby Khan, Fort Whyte PC MLA (who was minister of sport, culture and heritage when the project was initially approved).

Many of the same people were on hand July 31 at Northwood Community Centre, when a groundbreaking ceremony was held for an improvement project to create a new basketball court with sport-court surfacing, a new playground, asphalt pathway and other features. It is scheduled to be completed in June 2025.
