The Centre culturel franco-manitobain (CCFM) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Since its inception under the direction of former premier Ed Schreyer and then-culture minister Larry Desjardins, the CCFM has been a hub for Franco-Manitoban culture since Jan. 25, 1974. Schreyer and Desjardins realized the importance of an institution dedicated to the protection and celebration of Franco-Manitoban traditions, language, and arts. Since then, the CCFM has served as a hub for all Franco-Manitobans and Manitobans alike.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of honouring the accomplishments and importance of the CCFM in the Manitoba legislature by making a member’s statement. It gave me the opportunity to highlight the services, the accomplishments and the importance of the CCFM to francophone culture here in Manitoba. The work of the CCFM is so important for the francophone community, and I want to ensure that the CCFM is recognized. Located in the heart of St. Boniface, the CCFM and its board, staff and volunteers provide francophone programs and services to everyone who wishes. For that I thank them. The CCFM offers educational programming, host art exhibitions and shows, support cultural services, and have performance halls for local artists.

The CCFM’s work does so much for our community by showcasing and preserving our francophone heritage. I’m proud that our NDP government has made significant investments in the promotion of cultural and artistic activities in French for every Manitoban. This increase in funding to the CCFM comes after years of funding freezes and will support essential programing and services that promote our beautiful French language and heritage.

As a proud Métis francophone, I must say that community centres such as the CCFM affirm the identity of every francophone in Manitoba. It promotes innovation, inclusivity, and diversity through its programming, and it is proud to continue sharing and promoting the work and history of the francophone community. The CCFM helps strengthen the bonds of our community and I believe all francophone organisations across Canada should look to the CCFM as an example of excellence and dedication.

I am proud to continue representing the constituency of St. Boniface, and I am so pleased that the CCFM calls our constituency home. I am eager to see the next 50 years of excellence at the CCFM.

Longue vie au Centre culturel franco-manitobain!
