East St. Paul

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 01/01/2025 (593 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

To kick off 2025, we asked Members of the Legislative Assembly representing constituencies across East Winnipeg to weigh in on projects and initiatives to look forward to in the new year.

Here’s what those who responded had to say:

“It’s been a busy year, holding the NDP government to account and ensuring constituents are getting their concerns heard on Broadway. We’ll continue to do that,” said Jeff Wharton (PC, Red River North), adding that he plans to support a number of local projects in the new year, including expanding water and sewer in East St. Paul, and securing funding for a new roof for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 215. “East St. Paul is at (sewer) capacity in terms of being able to develop their community, so I’ll continue to work hard with council, who know they can’t continue to grow. (As well) the Legion Branch 215 reached out to my office regarding potential a redo of their roof — we’re talking in excess of a quarter-million dollars. That is a priority now, to work with them.”

“I’m super-excited to continue to do work to support our seniors. There are such giant needs for our older adult population,” said Rachelle Schott (NDP, Kildonan-River East), who helps organize a monthly grocery bus for residents in seniors’ housing along Henderson Highway. “(Also) North Winnipeg is obviously experiencing significant growth, and we’ve been hearing about the growing need for services from residents. For years, the expansion of Chief Peguis Trail is something people have brought up (as a need). I’m looking forward to seeing these kind of developments in 2025.”

“This past year has been a whirlwind in the best way,” said Tyler Blashko (NDP, Lagimodière). “I’m really excited for 2025 … we’re going to have two new schools open up, which is really great. Everyone’s eagerly anticipating these new schools to meet the needs of kids and families and educators. So we’re excited for that locally.”

“Personally, one of the things I found myself doing (as MLA) was a few more sports … I took up running this year as I prepared to participate in the Sage Creek 5k this fall. So that I really enjoyed,” he said.

“I’m super excited that we’re in the design phase of the new ER at the Victoria Hospital,” said Billie Cross (NDP, Seine River).

“I had the privilege of being at the groundbreaking ceremony, and I’m just thrilled that we’re getting something like that in the community where people can get healthcare close to home.”

MLA for Riel Mike Moyes said there have been a lot of great initiatives in the constituency at the community level with local organizations, which will continue into the new year.

These include initiatives at St. Amant, Dakota Community Centre, and the successful Greening of UCIM campaign at the United Church in Meadowood which has utilized green technology to provide a new geothermal heating and cooling system.

“I hope we’ll all keep working together,” Moyes said. “It’s been a real collaborative effort. Efficiency Manitoba was able to provide some support and grants to the folks at the United Church in Meadowood, who have shown great leadership.”

On a personal level, Moyes said he’s trying to embrace the Winnipeg winter and hoping to take up a winter recreational activity, possibly cross-country skiing.
