Like a nicely bowled ball on a manicured green, B-Cubed keeps gaining momentum in just the right way.
Now in third year, B-Cubed — which stands for bowls, beverages and barbecues — will be held at Norwood Lawn Bowling Club (1202 Dakota St.) on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings between June 11 and July 30.
B-Cubed is described as a social activity that gives participants a chance to learn a new sport and meet new people, as well enjoy some potentially gorgeous summer evenings in Manitoba. Ideally, those taking part are new or barely experienced bowlers, as the idea is to have fun without being too focused on the final score.

Paulette Abraham is a key organizer of B-Cubed — which stands for bowls, beverages and barbecues — which will be held at Norwood Lawn Bowling Club (1202 Dakota St.) on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings between June 11 and July 30.
The event consists of two leagues, as there are two available greens for the duration. At press time, 23 teams of four had signed up. The capacity is 32 teams, said key event organizer and NLBC treasurer Paulette Abraham. Once the capacity is reached, there will still be the opportunity for folks to be called upon as spares to join any given team.
“Everybody seemed to be having a good time last year,” Abraham said, noting the event is tailor-made for family members, friends, neighbours, or co-workers to come together to form a team. Most participants aren’t club members that might generally bowl at a higher level, she added.
“The B-Cubed rules are very relaxed, and we’ll happily give instructions on how to roll a ball beforehand and give a few pointers,” Abraham said, noting organizers have been fortunate during the last two years that B-Cubed has not been rained out, but if there is precipitation on any given night, activities will be moved inside.
Talking about the sport of lawn bowling, in general, Abraham said many curlers often make good bowlers, as there’s a similar skill set involved. And for those that might have mobility issues and a bit of trouble bending down, a metal arm that clutches the ball and acts as a bowling aid will be available to prospective participants, if needed.
“If you’re looking for a fun way to stay active, and meet new people, this is a great way to do that,” Abraham, an avid bowler who plays three times a week on average during the regular season, said. “When there’s music playing during the event, people are dancing on the greens. It’s fun, and I like the fact games are going on the whole time.”
