The East Kildonan-Transcona community committee held a regular meeting on May 23.

The committee last met on April 8, and cancelled its May 1 meeting following the death of Coun. Jason Schreyer (Elmwood-East Kildonan) on April 29.

A number of development plans in Transcona were discussed at the May 23 meeting.

Following a public hearing on May 23, the East Kildonan-Transcona community committee approved the closure of Gevaert Street and the public lane, south of Valde Avenue.

Plans were approved for an eight-unit multi-family building at 701 Pandora Ave. W, including a clause that an American elm tree must be planted on-site. In addtion, four townhouse-style multi-family buildings at 1444 Ravelston Ave. W and for four townhouse-style multi-family buildings at 1285 Devonshire Dr. W. were approved.

A non-conforming approach at 100 Battershill St. was also approved and an extension of time for the proposed subdivision and rezoning of lots 2 and 3 at Peguis Street and Reenders Drive was granted to April 26, 2026.

The committee also approved community fund grants for 1st John De Graff Scout Group ($7,421) for storage locker costs; the Colombian Alliance in Manitoba Inc. ($1,500) for keeping the organization’s youth programming free for participants; and the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation ($38,440).

Following a public hearing, an excess animal permit for 220 Poplar Ave., for seven cats and four dogs through May 30, 2030 was approved. One community member was registered in opposition, with two in support.

A hearing was also held regarding the closure of Gevaert Street and the public lane, south of Valde Avenue, was approved. Nobody was registered in opposition.
