Outdoor classroom named in honour of former school trustee Johnston

A longtime former Louis Riel School Division trustee now has a new outdoor classroom dedicated in her honour.
On June 19, officials from the division and Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) dedicated the classroom in the City’s William Johnstone Park — which serves students from the nearby Dr. D. W. Penner School — in honour of Louise Johnston, who retired in 2022 after more than 30 years as a school trustee.
In a statement, Mayes said the classroom was inspired by requests from teachers at the St. Vital-based school, who recognized an opportunity to “utilize the seldom-used small forest in the park to help educate students about nature.”
The $60,000 classroom project was funded through the City’s 2023 budget for St Vital park projects, Mayes said.
“I sat on a pension committee with Louise when I was a school trustee in 2006-2010. I mistook her quiet demeanour for indecision — I did not make that mistake a second time!” Mayes said in the statement.
“Louise had a great record of working with other trustees and other levels of government to get things done. I am proud to be part of this project.”
