Khartum Ladies celebrate 100 years
The Khartum Ladies’ Auxiliary will celebrate 100 years of service on Sunday, Nov. 2, between 1 and 5:30 p.m. at the Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY) Centre (1155 Notre Dame Ave.).
Tickets cost $35 and include a buffet lunch, silent auction, quilt raffle, kids’ activities and more.
The Ladies’ Auxiliary was founded in 1925 to support the new Shriners ward at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, which was then located on Redwood Avenue, near Main Street. The group supported the Shriners Hospital on Wellington Crescent until it was gifted to the provincial government in 1977 (the advance of Medicare meant that medical indigence ceased to be an issue for most Canadian), but continued to support the work of what was renamed the Rehabilitation Centre for Children. The Rehabilitation Centre is now located at the SSCY Centre and the Khartum Ladies’ Auxiliary continues to support its work, in addition to contributing to the travel fund for children from Manitoba and Northwest Ontario receiving treatment at the Shriners Hospital in Montreal.
Tickets for the Nov. 2 celebration are available from Bonnie Davies (204 284-6229) or June Krochenski (204 255-5545).
