It’s anticipated that hundreds of visitors will attend Louis Riel School Division’s Career and Post-Secondary Symposium (CAPS), which will be held at Louis Riel Arts and Technology Centre (5 De Bourmont Ave.) on Nov. 13 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Most of that visitor count will consist of students and their parents at the upcoming event, which will also feature many different guests as lots of different industries will be represented, said Adriano Magnifico, career lead at LRATC, noting the theme of this year’s event is “crafting your journey.”
The event will include a Career Café space, a sit-down area with chairs for chats with industry professionals; a post-secondary space, where universities, colleges, and certificate and diploma programs will be showcased; an interactive space, which will include working with drones, cyber security problems and gaming exercises; and a speaker space. More than 50 student volunteers from throughout the division are involved with the event.

Magnifico said part of the appeal of the event is that it gives all those involved to meet face-to-face under the same roof, including engineers, doctors, lawyers, IT professionals and social workers, which adds a whole new layer to their studies and research.
“The students have access to try to use the people in the room to go that extra step further,” he said, noting Assiniboine Community College, Brandon University and the University College of the North will be among the educational institutions in attendance.
“There’s nothing more important than helping students use their credits. This content is so important … it’s like self-empathy, as helps build confidence and make decision-making stronger. There are many classrooms outside your classroom.”
Student volunteer Ihuoma Ogbonna said the upcoming event will provide enlightenment for those attending.
“We’ve helped put this event together, when lots of organizations will come together to enlighten people about stuff that’s going on,” Ogbonna, 17, said.
“I want to put myself out there and give back to the community. I want to go out of my comfort zone.”
Student volunteer Praise Olayiwola added that one of the best of things about the event is that it’s tailored to showcase modern trends and modern technologies.
“There are lots of opportunities in Winnipeg, and lots of people coming (to the event). One exhibitor that really caught my eye is a drone booth,” Olayiwola, 18, said.
“This is hands-on learning, and it’s showing students something they can take away and learn from.”
