Remembrance Day services in east Winnipeg

With Remembrance Day nearing, a number of events will take place across the city to commemorate those who have died serving Canada in combat over the years.
On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Grade 6 students from across River East Transcona School Division will attend the No Stone Left Alone ceremony at Transcona Cemetery, where they will hear from veterans and place poppies on every grave in the cemetery’s Field of Honour. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.
The Transcona Museum will once again brings its award-winning Stories of Remembrance: From Hometown to Frontlines display to Kildonan Place Shopping Centre (1555 Regent Ave. W) for the week leading to Remembrance Day. An opening ceremony will take place at noon on Thursday, Nov. 6 and the display will run until Nov. 11.

The Royal Canadian Legion No. 7 in Transcona will march from the branch, located at 117 Regent Ave. E, to the Transcona East End Arena (517 Pandora Ave. E) for a Remembrance Day service on Nov. 11. The parade begins at 10 a.m.
The Royal Canadian Air Force Band will perform at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute’s Jubilee Place (181 Riverton Ave.) on Friday, Nov. 7. The concert, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of CFB Winnipeg, begins at 7:30 p.m. Joining the RCAF Band will be members of the Regimental Band of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the band of HMCS Chippawa, and the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders Pipes & Drums. Admission is by donation with all funds donated to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
Schools throughout the city will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 for Remembrance Day.
Events that day include
• RBC Convention Centre (375 York Ave.) will host Winnipeg’s main Remembrance Day ceremony, indoors with seating for over 4,000 people in Hall AB. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m., the audience is expected to be seated by 10:30 a.m. and the service will begin at 10:40 a.m.
There will also be a number of Remembrance Day ceremonies across east Winnipeg.
• Transcona Legion Branch No. 7 (117 Regent Ave. E) — Remembrance Day parade begins at the Legion at 10 a.m. The route runs down Regent to Leola Street, then south on Leola to Pandora Avenue East to the Transcona East End Arena (517 Pandora Ave. E). Everyone is welcome to attend the parade and the service to follow, though everyone is asked to be seated by 10:30 a.m. The branch will be open afterwards for members and guests.
• Henderson Highway Legion Branch No. 215 (215 Maxwell King Dr.) — Service at the neighbouring Eastview Community Church (315 Maxwell King Dr.) begins at 10:50 a.m. sharp. All are welcome to attend. The branch will be open afterwards for members and guests.
• Norwood St. Boniface Legion Branch No. 43 (134 Marion St.) — Ceremony to be held in the banquet hall at 11 a.m. sharp, with lunch to follow. EVeryone is welcome to attend.
• Glenwood Community Centre (27 Overton St.) — Community will gather at the community centre for 10:30 a.m. for a walk to nearby Guay Park for a service at 10:45 a.m. Refreshments and dainties will be served at the club following the service.
Prince Edward Legion Branch 81 (300 Trent Ave.) — Service will be held at St. Alphonsus Hall (341 Munroe Ave.) at 10:30. All are welcome. The branch will be open afterwards for members and guests.
Elmwood Legion Branch 9 (920 Nairn Ave.) — Service will be held in the branch hall starting at 11 a.m. All are welcome. The branch will be open afterwards for members and guests.
