La Maison des artistes visuels francophones is hosting its annual members show.

The exhibit opened Dec. 4 and will run until Dec. 20. Its theme is Plus ou moins — or More or less — which translates as “what do we want to see more or less of in the new year,” according to La Maison executive director Lou-Anne Bourdeau.

She said the St. Boniface-based gallery has around 60 members in different capacities, including artist members and support members, and the works of 24 of those people are showcased in La Maison’s main gallery (219 Provencher Blvd.)

Bourdeau said exhibits can either consist of previously created works or pieces created specifically for the show. It is also an opportunity to embrace the gallery’s community and show thanks to everyone involved, she said.

“The end of the year is a good time to celebrate each other, and the gifts we bring,” Bourdeau said. “It’s a time to gather together and celebrate our work in our community.”

Member artist Joanne Berger said she’s pleased to be in the show.

“I’m kind of honoured to be part of an exhibition with other artists in a unique place,” Berger said.

The south St. Vital resident admits that she’s thrilled when someone buys one of her creations: “It feels great.”

Member artist Jean-François Godbout said he’s happy to be part of the exhibit.

“Most of my work is abstract painting, and I’m thrilled to be able to collaborate with other artists and express myself,” Godbout said.

He said he was a school administrator during his working life, and now loves having the freedom to follow his artistic passions and pursuits.

Bourdeau emphasized that while the gallery is immersed in the francophone culture, prospective members don’t necessarily need to be Franco-Manitobans.

“We’re a French-speaking gallery, but if you want to join you don’t have to be a francophone,” she said. “Our members have so many talents, whether it’s textiles, paintings, or photography, it shows there’s so much talent in the city and the province.”
