Tackaberry ready for next chapter

One mover and shaker in the Park City community is calling it a career — but that doesn’t mean she’s going anywhere soon.
Colleen Tackaberry, a long-serving advocate for seniors in Transcona and beyond, retired from her position as senior resource co-ordinator with the Transcona Council for Seniors on Dec. 31, 2025, after working with the council for over 20 years.
“I moved back here from British Columbia in 2004 and my husband saw an ad in the newspaper for the meal program co-ordinator position, through the council,” Tackaberry recalled. “I love to cook and I enjoy working with people. It was a wonderful group of people. It continues to run out of Transcona Memorial United Church. That was how I got involved with the council.”

Colleen Tackaberry has retired from her position as senior resource co-ordinator with the Transcona Council for Seniors.
In 2007, Tackaberry stepped into the role of senior resource co-ordinator for the council, applying her energy and enthusiasm to the position, starting with reviving the volunteer driver program which provides rides to seniors in need across Transcona.
“There had been a lull when I took over, where nobody was in that position,” she said. “There were two volunteer drivers, though, and they continued with the folks they knew needed rides. What amazing dedication! I tried to improve that program, as well as an exercise program. We were able to put exercise into a number of seniors’ blocks that way. That was really fun. People really enjoyed coming together.”
Since then, programming provided by the council has only grown, with many different activities and events throughout the year for Transcona seniors, including the annual Health Fair, which has been held at Kildonan Place Shopping Centre (1555 Regent Ave. W) for over a decade.
“What the council is really about is breaking down isolation, and helping them live their best lives,” Tackaberry said.
The impact Tackaberry has had during her time with the council is not lost on those who have worked with her.
“Working alongside the most dedicated woman I know for the past 17 years has been an absolute privilege,” said Stacy Boone, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority community facilitator for Transcona. “Her role in seniors’ health — fostering connection, kindness, and a true zest for fun — has always shone through in her deep love for her work and her community. Along the way, a true and lasting friendship bloomed between us as well. Her retirement is not only well deserved, but truly earned.”
Lorri Dahl has taken over as senior resource co-ordinator for the Transcona Council for Seniors, but Tackaberry said she will continue to volunteer her time to two programs close to her heart — the vision-impaired group and the Alzheimer’s support group.
“I’ll continue to do the same work, I just won’t get paid,” she said with a laugh.
