The popularity of Sabrina Naayen’s Meow Mania continues to grow, so she’s had to change the location of her feline-focused spring market and adoption fair.

The upcoming Meow Mania will be held at Assiniboia Downs (3975 Portage Ave.) on Sunday, March 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Every event gives me the opportunity to do something better,” said Naayen, who lives Bridgwater Forest, said. “We have more rescues participating this year, which means more exposure and more cats potentially being adopted.”

Meow Mania begin in the fall of 2024 at Deer Lodge Community Centre, then switched to St. Norbert Arena last spring before moving to the Downs last fall to help accommodate the growing number of cat lovers showing up.

“The response from the events last spring and fall was great — everyone loved them,” said Naayen, who owns Pawparazzi Pet Photography.

“Last fall, we had speaker presentations on feline behaviour, and this time we’ll have an expert doing two talks,” she added.

The six-hour event will include more than 40 vendors showcasing cat-related products, and a cat adoption fair featuring animals from nine local rescues, where visitors will be able to meet potential new family members. There will also be a silent auction, and food trucks. Those who purchase VIP passes will gain exclusive access for the first hour.

Also in attendance will be several local cats deemed celebrities because of their social media followings.

Meow Mania attendees have also been known to bring along their feline friends to the event; Naayen said doing so is fine, but emphasized that the environment is best suited to well-socialized cats. (Also, no dogs are allowed.)

“If you love cats, it’s a great place to be with other people who love cats, and you’ll see cats everywhere. There will be something for everyone,” Naayen said.

Since the first Meow Mania, organizers have found homes for more than 35 cats and kittens and donated $3,600 to local rescues.
