Province, municipalities prepare for spring flood

As the snow melts with the coming of spring, Red River valley residents are preparing to mitigate flood damage.

According to information released by the province last week, the peak Red River level in Winnipeg at James Avenue is expected to range from 15.5 to 20 feet, depending on future weather conditions, below the city’s flood protection infrastructure. As such, the city released a statement on March 28 noting it is “well prepared” for all possible scenarios. Based on weather conditions and current flows, the province expects the Red River to hit 2017 levels.

“Crews have been working on annual spring preparations for several weeks,” the statement read. “We are continually reviewing our river flood protection measures and activities, including monitoring river levels, preparing for temporary and permanent pumping, closing river gates, sealing manholes, and filling sandbags.”

As of March 28, the river level at the James Avenue gauge was 10.52 feet.

At press time, the city had identified a number of properties that were at risk of flooding, estimating a need for 10,000 sandbags, which are available to city residents from city depots at 1220 Pacific Ave.; 1539 Waverley St.; and 960 Thomas Ave.
