A new piped sewage system in St. Eustache is expected to come in under budget, according to officials with the Rural Municipality of Cartier.
Cartier chief administrative officer Anne Burns said the project, which will see 100 households converted from septic fields to piped sewer lines, was originally expected to cost about $2.7 million.
However, the cost is expected to be nearly $1 million less than originally anticipated now that most of the tenders have been awarded, she said. Work on the project began May 3.
The cost of the project is being shared by all three levels of government. Federal and provincial funding is being provided through the Canada-Manitoba Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.
Work on the project will be performed by two Manitoba-based companies. Crown Utilities of Winnipeg received the contracts for the sewer line portion of the project based on its bid of $736,491. Tri Line Construction of Arborg will oversee the lagoon portion of the project after submitting a bid of $321,279.
Both of the contracts are expected to be completed by the end of the year if weather permits.
A contract for service connection will be tendered in June. A spokesperson for the Manitoba Water Services Board said that it expects that the contract for the service connection will be completed by early 2011.
