Skaters in the Rural Municipality of Cartier will be able to glide a little easier thanks to the recent purchase of a new ice resurfacing machine.
Councillors in the municipality recently approved spending $25,000 to purchase the resurfacer.
Reeve Roland Rasmussen said the resurfacer was an essential purchase because the St. Eustache Arena is an integral part of the community for many residents.
“The old ice surfacer needed a lot of work and council thought this was an important purchase for the arena,” he said.
Dale Piper, a member of St. Eustache Minor Hockey’s board of directors, said the municipality had little choice but to purchase the new machine.
“If (the old one) broke down, like we were worried it would, we would essentially have to close our doors,” he said.
Piper said that it would have been too costly for the organization to repair the old resurfacer.
He said the association discovered the new equipment quite by chance.
“I came upon this particular one when I was at a business that I deal with on an unrelated matter,” he said.
“It happened to be there and as they explained to me all the work they had done to it, I started thinking it would be a good fit for us.”
Piper acknowledged that the board had been contemplating replacing the old resurfacer for some time.
“I figured that because of all the maintenance and repairs that had been done to this one, if we could (replace) it we should,” he said.
Piper said approximately 100 area children are currently enrolled in the St. Eustache minor hockey program.
He said that not only does minor hockey keep kids active, it brings families and the community closer together.
“Keeping the arena operational is important to the community,” he said.
