Fountains chosen to help keep Deer Pointe ponds free from algae growth

RM of Headingley council has chosen to install aeration pumps that can be used to power fountains, to solve the problem of algae buildup in Deer Pointe’s retention ponds.

Three ponds are located in the new subdivision, and the hydro connections needed to run the pumps are being placed before landscaping is completed, said Headingley CAO Chris Fulsher.

The estimated cost is $72,000. Fulsher said discussions are being held with the subdivision’s developer to determine the number of fountains needed.

Municipal economic development officer Dave White laid out three options, in a memo to council, on dealing with algae buildup in the ponds.

The first option was to continue and increase application of an environmentally-friendly chemical that didn’t work well in the hot weather.

Another option was placing 10 windmills on the west side of the subdivision at a cost of $47,000.

However, White noted that the windmills’ ability to provide aeration depends on the wind, and some residents might object to looking at the windmills.
