Macdonald rejigs ward boundaries ahead of election

Residential expansion in Oak Bluff and La Salle has resulted in the RM of Macdonald’s ward boundaries being redrawn.

On Jan. 28, council passed a resolution reducing the number of wards from seven to six. Wards 1 and 6, which cover the areas near Domain and Brunkild, respectively, will be combined ahead of the October municipal election.

“We did a realignment of the ward boundaries,” Macdonald CAO Tom Raine said.

The purpose was to divide up the municipality with each ward having close to an equal number of residents.

Ward 1 councillor and deputy reeve Doug Dobrowolski said council came up with many different scenarios, but merging the two southern wards was felt to be the best solution.

“Everyone gets a fair area,” he said.

The new ward divisions could result in Dobrowolski running against Ward 6 councillor Cynthia Bisson in the upcoming election, but Dobrowolski didn’t want to speculate on that happening.

Raine said the vote to change the ward boundaries was advertised before Jan. 28, but no one attended the meeting to speak about the resolution.
