Parents and children streamed into the LSCU Complex in La Salle on Feb. 8 to enjoy a pancake breakfast and celebrate the recreation centre’s grand opening.

No one was happier that morning than La Salle Community Centre board vice-president Gary Romijn, who was emcee for the ribbon-cutting. He gave an emotional thank-you to the other board members, who put in hundreds of hours planning and fundraising to give their community a centre they can be proud of.

“This is your complex,” he told the audience of about 120.

Approximately $600,000 was raised so far to pay for the building and equipment, with $100,000 coming from the main corporate sponsor, the La Salle Credit Union, for which the complex was named. CEO Daniel Dion helped to cut the ribbon, and spoke about the financial institution’s 60-year history in La Salle.

“For us, ‘Growing with You’ is more than a slogan — it’s how we fit into the community,” Dion said, adding his daughter will soon hold her wedding social in the complex.

“We’re very proud to have our name on the building,” he said.

Romijn thanked other major corporate and individual donors including Ventura Land Development, CMC Developments and the Manness family, and the Pollard and Pfrimmer families.

The complex contains a full-sized gym, multi-purpose room, fitness centre, outdoor rink and meeting rooms.
