Honouring Cuthbert Grant’s memory

Descendants of Métis leader Cuthbert Grant are travelling to St. Francois Xavier from across North America to attend a ceremony on July 20 marking the 160th anniversary of his death.

Sept Steward – Siol Cudbright of the Cuthbert Grant clan, Sandra Horyski , who lives in Winnipeg’s North End, said the day will start with a service in the St. Francois Xavier Roman Catholic Church at 1053 Highway 26.

“We have descendants coming from the States,” she said, adding up to 60 people in total are expected to attend.

Horyski led the campaign to arrange for a marker honouring Grant to be placed on Sept. 28, 2013 in the parish cemetery next to the burial plots of Grant’s daughter Maria and her husband, Pascal Breland. The location of Grant’s own grave is unknown.

The Manitoba Métis Federation is lending a Métis flag to be draped over Grant’s marker. Horyski said Manitoba Heritage Association members will be dressed in period costumes and readings will be given.

She’s hoping that a plaque listing the names of those who donated towards Grant’s marker will be ready to be placed on or near the marker.
