Access Credit Union members at the Oak Bluff and Sanford branches are facing another vote on amalgamation.
The two branches formerly comprised Sanford Credit Union and merged with Access Credit Union on Jan. 1, 2013. All Access members are now being asked to vote on an amalgamation with Assiniboine Credit Union at Access’s annual general meeting in April.
Access Credit Union’s chief executive officer Larry Davey said that, if approved, the merger will combine Access’s approximately 42,000 members at 17 branches across southern Manitoba with Assiniboine Credit Union’s approximately 112,800 members at 21 branches in Winnipeg, Gillam and Thompson. The new credit union will be called Access Credit Union and will hold assets of about $5.7 billion.
The new credit union will be the largest in Manitoba, and sixth-largest in Canada, according to a news release sent out by Access and Assiniboine credit unions.
Davey said he feels the two credit unions share a strong commitment to membership service and community support.
“The biggest thing is the fit between the two organizations,” he said.
Access Credit Union has increased its community support provided through staff volunteerism and monetary contributions over the last few years, Davey said, and this won’t change if the amalgamation is approved.
“The level of community support will continue,” he said. “This partnership will allow us to focus on even bigger projects.”
Davey said having branches in Winnipeg will be more convenient for Access members, and little in the way of switching debit cards, cheques and other financial tools will be required immediately.
He’s predicting that Access members will approve the amalgamation.
“We feel that the members and staff we’ve been talking to have been happy about it,” he said.
Access Credit Union’s annual general meeting will be held April 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church (120 Pineview Dr.) in Winkler.
