FortWhyte Alive offers holiday fun for families

FortWhyte Alive at 1961 McCreary Rd. has plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to make this holiday season fun for all ages.

Help Fort Whyte’s expert birders identify and record winter bird species at FortWhyte Alive at the Holiday Bird Count for Kids on Sat., Dec. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. End the afternoon with hot chocolate by the fire. Information on the bird count can be found at www.birdscanada.org
Go back in time to the prairie pioneers with Storytelling in the Sodhouse – A Christmas Carol Unplugged on Sun., Dec. 20 at 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Visit the FortWhyte farm to see pigs, chickens and rabbits, and learn all about our programming and operations on Thurs., Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Farm products can be purchased for last minute gifts.

Drop in to FortWhyte Alive throughout the holiday season to get outdoors and stay active with your family. Activities free with admission will take place daily from noon to 2 p.m. These include snowshoeing and a bonfire on Sat., Dec. 26, the Scandinavian game of kubb on the lake on Sun., Dec. 27, jam pail curling on Mon., Dec. 28, ice fishing on Tues., Dec. 29 and snow carving on Wed., Dec. 30.

Come as a family to visit FortWhyte Farms urban rabbitry on Mon., Dec. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn about how rabbits play an important role in agriculture while petting and feeding the warren. Bring your own lunch and camera.

Feed the birds during the cold months by making a 100 per cent local suet using homegrown grains and lard on Wed., Dec. 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children must register with an adult.

Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
Dec. 24: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.;
Dec. 25: Closed;
Dec. 26: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
Dec. 31: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and
Jan. 1: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
