Canas Development Corp. has purchased more land in the RM of Headingley and expanded its plans for a hotel/office project.

Canas spokesman Brian Aslan said the company now owns close to three acres at 4805, 4811 and 4815 Portage Ave., across from John Blumberg Golf Course. The company plans to build a four-storey, 88-suite hotel to be connected to a separate office building by 300-stall underground parking. The development would include about 60,000 square-metres of commercial space.

In January 2014, the company had applied for and received a conditional use application from Headingley council for a similarly sized hotel, but was looking for a hotel chain interested in the project. Aslan said Canas has been successful in attracting a brand-name company, but the agreement hasn’t been finalized yet and no design plans drafted.

Because the company’s original plans changed and now include the office building and underground parking, it had to reapply for a conditional use permit and variation to approve the 50-foot building height. These were granted at the council’s July 12th meeting.

Aslan said he’s confident that the project will take shape over the next six to eight months, with construction to start in spring 2017.
