LSCU Complex board president Dave Brown is urging La Salle and area residents to support their community by volunteering.
The board has vacancies for communications director and fundraising and fall festival directors-at-large.
“Volunteers for the community centre are integral for the longevity of the centre,” he said.
While other board members and volunteers are stepping up to help organize the annual fall festival planned for Sat., Sept. 10, Brown said people need to realize that this type of special event requires a lot of organization.
Two paid staff members are able to oversee the day-to-day operation of the complex, Brown said, and the board sets direction and works on major fundraisers such as the annual charity golf tournament on Fri., Sept. 2 and fall supper on Sun., Sept. 18, as well as the fall festival.
“We don’t get any government funding unlike community centres in the city, so fundraising is essential,” Brown said.
While parents whose children participate in activities at the complex are required to complete three hours of volunteer work, Brown said its tough finding people who are willing to give up more of their time.
“There seems to be a fear of making a long-term commitment,” he said.
Board members attend monthly meetings, with a break in the summer, and the amount of time they need to spend on duties relating to their position varies, Brown said.
