Central Region places third at Games

The Central Region team competing at the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Games in Steinbach from Aug. 7 to 13 placed third overall in points.

The two teams from Winnipeg captured first and second spot at the Games in which about 1,800 athletes age 10 to 17 competed.

Dawson Mann, of Sanford, won gold in the midget class 800-metre race and individual cross-country race. Abby Bestland, from Brunkild placed first in the midget class 80-metres hurdles and silver in the 200-metre race. Sanford’s Zoe Penno won gold in the U15 girls cross-country and short-track cycling events.  Austin Legault, of Headingley, placed first in the U15 boys cross-country and short-track cycling competitions. Soren Weselake, from Portage la Prairie, earned first place in the U13 boys short-track cycling and silver in the cross-country cycling race. La Salle’s Kendra Penner placed first in girls sailing. Hailee Morisseau, from Portage la Prairie, won gold in the girls triathlon for ages 16 and 17.

Chanel Cabak, from Portage la Prairie, got a silver in the bantam girls 800-metre race and bronze in the 150-metre event. Tyler Funk, also from Portage la Prairie, got second place in the bantam boys standing long jump event and bronze in high jump. Sanford’s Ellen Bestland won silver in the midget class girls cross-country race. Madison Firlotte, from St. Francois Xavier, got silver in the triathlon for ages 10 and 11. Blake Harris, of Sanford, won silver in the boys triathlon for ages 12 and 13.

Simone Crevier, of Portage la Prairie won bronze in midget class in the 800-metre race. Elie’s Carson Legault earned third place in the midget boys 100-metre hurdles event. Ryan Young, from St. Francois Xavier, got third place in the midget class for boys long jump. Devon Borody captured bronze in the midget class girls discus event. Lacy Poschenrieder, from Portage la Prairie, received a bronze in the bantam girls ball throw. Poplar Point’s Ryland McKay won third place in Special Olympics mens’ golf. Jared Vachon, from Portage la Prairie, earned bronze in junior boys 500-metre and 100-metre butterfly swimming competitions. Joseph McEwing, from Portage la Prairie, swam to a third place spot in junior boys 100-metre breaststroke. Kendra Harris, of Sanford, won third in girls triathlon for ages 10 and 11, Conor Rae, from Portage la Prairie, won bronze in boys triathlon for ages 10 and 11.
