Learning about dangers of fentanyl and other drugs
The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba is hosting a public forum on Mon., Jan. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Herman Prior Senior Services Centre (40 Royal Rd N) in Portage la Prairie to provide information on fentanyl and other opioids and dangerous drugs.
The forum will include presentations by AFM medical director Dr. Ginette Poulin and AFM pharmacist Dr. Sheri Fandrey, Leith Saunders from the Paramedics Association of Manitoba, Portage la Prairie RCMP community liaison officer Amber Storey and an AFM youth worker.
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session.
“We want the public to come out with their questions,” Poulin said. “It’s open to everyone and free of charge.”
There will also be displays of addiction resources available to local residents.
Curling is underway in La Salle
The La Salle Curling Club’s season includes three bonspiels in the coming months.
An open bonspiel for men’s, women’s and co-ed teams will run from Feb. 10 to 12. Registration includes Calcutta and a meal.

A family bonspiel is planned for Sat., March 11. Registration is included in the league fee for young curlers in Junior Curling and the Learn to Curl program. The fee for other teams is $60.

A ladies bonspiel is running from March 17 to 19. Registration includes Calcutta and a meal.

Local youth can join the club’s junior league held on Wednesdays. League embers can also participate in the Learn to Curl program on Mondays and the family bonspiel as no extra cost.

Showcasing Manitoba agriculture
The Portage la Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating agriculture at its Agriculture Awareness Expo on Sat., Feb. 4 in the MNP Exhibition Building at Island Park in Portage.
This is a free event for anyone interested in meeting local producers, learning about careers in agriculture, learning how science and research helps make our food safe and healthy, and sampling locally-grown food products.
The Chamber is looking for exhibitors for a Home Grown Ag Product Showcase. The cost is $50 for a table.

Socializing over cards
Local residents are welcome to stop in for a game of cards or cribbage in the multi-purpose room at the LSCU Complex in La Salle on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Cards and cribbage boards are supplied and pre-registration isn’t required. The drop-in fee is $2 and $10 if you’re paying on a monthly basis.

Volunteer Manitoba and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries invite nominations to the 34th Annual Volunteer Awards. Individuals, youth and community groups are recognized for their outstanding achievements, their dedication to the community we share and excellence in volunteerism.
The AMM Community Leadership Award recognizes an individual living outside of Winnipeg who has carried out any of the following:
• Responds to community issues by creating a program or new initiative;
• Advances social issues that affect the well-being of community members, families and the community-at-large;
