St. Francois Xavier School students could soon be spending less time on the bus.

Prairie Rose School Division secretary-treasurer Gerard Lesage said board trustees recently voted in favour of adding a fourth bus to the current routes within the RM of St. Francois Xavier to transport the students beginning in April after spring break until the school year ends.

Lesage said that the additional fourth bus will continue to provide direct bus service to St. Francois Xavier School students who live within the 1.6-kilometre radius of the school and will reduce the bus travel time for some students on the three existing bus routes.

SFX reeve Dwayne Clark spoke at the March 6 board meeting to highlight the need for students who live within the 1.6-kilometre radius of the school to be safely transported to and from school by bus rather than walking or cycling.

Clark said he explained that just a small section of the village area can be accessed by a pathway and most students would have to walk along Highway 26, which has no shoulders and is within a 70 kilometre/hour speed zone outside of the school zone.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s set up like that,” Clark said, as most of the properties along Highway 26 are located on what were once river lots.

He said council would like to extend the pathway within the village but require provincial or federal funding to help pay for the project.

He hopes PRSD will be able to continue running the fourth bus in 2017-18.
