Kingswood Golf & Country Club president Christie Houston likes watching the expression on guests’ faces as they enter the newly renovated facility in La Salle.
Rather than being faced with the bar upon entry, guests now see a decorative wall bearing a lighted sign. To the right is Fairways, a completely renovated restaurant and lounge with a horseshoe-shaped bar and wall with a built-in fireplace dividing the two sections.
Houston, the majority shareholder of a group of local investors who bought the club a year ago, said the work began after golf season ended in 2016 and continued throughout the winter. A grand opening was held on April 28.
“We’ve had very positive reviews,” she said.
A new eat-in and take-out menu is being launched and Houston said the kitchen staff is headed by executive chef Ryan Martin.
The restaurant and lounge can hold about 125 people. The banquet room, which features towering windows and is freshly painted in light colours, has a 250-person capacity. A four-season sun porch that can hold 70 people will soon be open.
Houston, who lives in La Salle, said the revamp comes in time for the golf and country club’s 30th anniversary.
“We wanted a big reveal.”
She is working with her sister Kelly to promote the facility as a venue for weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, conferences and other special events.
“We really love doing events. We can accommodate anybody’s needs.”
The restaurant is now open year-round still offering its traditional Sunday brunch, but adding other special promotions such as a chocolate, cheese and wine event. Live entertainment may be offered in the lounge, Houston said.
“We’re more than just (golf) tournaments,” she said.
However, the investment didn’t end with the restaurant/lounge and banquet room as David Borowski was hired as the club’s golf pro. A new virtual golf lounge allows golfers to check out some of the world’s best-known courses without having to worry about current weather conditions.
Houston said Kingswood’s 18-hole course is in good shape thanks to head superintendent Adam Junkin and his crew. This year’s men’s league has about 90 members, with 46 in the women’s league. There is also a junior league, but tee-time reservations can usually be made online unless there is a large tournament being held.
An open tournament is planned for July 7, with proceeds going to the True North Foundation’s Project 11 charity for youth education.
La Salle’s ongoing residential growth is a positive factor for Kingswood and other local businesses, Houston said.
She tries to employ as many local residents as possible and use local service providers and vendors.
“It’s a nice investment in the community,” she said.
With the Winnipeg Blue Bomber season kicking off, Kingswood is offering bus service to and from Investors Group Field for home games, and will host special viewing events for away games.
