It’s great to be a pet owner, but stressful if you have to travel or can’t always find the time to care adequately for your pet.
That’s where Pawsitive Pet Care, owned and operated by Jillian Enright, of Cartier, comes in. Enright provides a variety of services including dog walking, pet sitting and dog training.
Enright was studying psychology at university and working part-time in a retail pet store in Winnipeg about ten years ago. She discovered that many customers asked the store’s staff for advice on caring for their pets.

“I noticed that a lot of poor advice was being given out,” Enright said. “I wanted to provide better information to clients.”
She has a lifelong love of animals, and began thinking about how the behaviour modification skills she learned in psychology could also be applied to pet training.
“We are all animals and learn in the same way with actions and consequences,” Enright said.
Enright built up her business gradually over the past eight years. She initially launched her dog-walking business from her Crestview home, advertising mainly through social media. When she took maternity leave for her son who’s now five, she hired staff to fill in. She now has three part-time and two casual employees.
“We provide for every need that a pet has,” Enright said. Pawsitive staff can be booked to stop in a few times a day to take a pup outside for a bathroom break or even to stay overnight to pet sit for an owner who’s on vacation.
Some dogs and cats become highly anxious if they are placed in a boarding kennel, so being able to stay in their home environment is much less stressful for them, Enright said.
Enright earned her internationally-recognized professional dog trainer certification about three years ago. She said, while there are some good dog trainers in Winnipeg, the industry isn’t regulated so anyone can advertise themselves as being a trainer.
Enright uses a reward-based, positive reinforcement training style which she said gets good results.
“It’s just like with people — you get more results with positive training.”
Rather than organizing group training classes, Enright goes to a client’s home for one-on-one sessions. In some cases, a few sessions will do as she encourages the owner to try the same techniques and exercises as she uses with their animal. In other cases, she will return occasionally to see if any further training is needed.
“I usually stay connected with my clients over a number of years,” she said.
Enright and her family moved into the RM of Cartier about a year ago, and she’s been focusing on gaining new clients in the Headingley, St. Francois Xavier and Elie areas.
