WWHSHL playoffs continue
The Sanford Sabres girls hockey team was successful in eliminating the Beliveau Barracudas in two straight games, moving them into the semi-final series in CTV division 1 in the Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League playoffs.
The Sabres played their first game against the Vincent Massey Trojans on Feb. 27 and lost 5-2.
Their second game was set for March 3 and the third and deciding game, if necessary, on March 5. The results of these games weren’t available at press time.
The Portage Collegiate Saints were matched against the J.H. Bruns Broncos in the Winnipeg Free Press division quarter-finals.
As of Feb. 27, the Saints and Broncos were tied with a win apiece and their third and deciding game was scheduled for Feb. 28. Game results weren’t available at press time.
Skate with NHL alumni
Registration is open for the 10th annual Mike Keane Celebrity Hockey Classic at the Bell MTS Iceplex (3969 Portage Ave.) on March 18 and 19.
This event brings former NHL players — such as former Montreal Canadiens’ Keane, Carolina Hurricanes’ Mike Commodore, and Jets alumni Tanner Glass among others — together with adult non-professional players age 25 and over to simulate a professional hockey league experience.
Players are required to fundraise, with the money going to True North Youth Foundation’s Project 11, offering mental health programs in Manitoba schools, The Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy, that gives inner city students the chance to develop hockey skills, and Winnipeg-based non-profit Continuity Care, which supports families with members having intellectual disabilities.
The event has raised more than $2.5 million over the past nine years.
Teams of 15 to 20 players can register as well as individuals who will be placed on teams.
The games played from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 19 are open to the public with a $10 admission fee also going to the three charities.
