Lyuba Solnik spends many hours in her kitchen doing what she loves — making healthy homemade foods.
Her mission is “to help our customers to take a break from cooking but still enjoy the home-cooked meal.”
The St. Eustache resident decided to turn what had been more of a hobby — cooking for her family and friends — into a home-based business about 18 months ago and Lyuba’s Kitchen was launched.
Solnik, originally from Ukraine, said she wanted something to do while her two children were in school.
“I figured I might as well do some cooking. It started with perogies and went on,” she said, adding that she got a home business licence from the RM of Cartier.
Her product line now also includes pizza. mini pot pies, ham and cheese scones, sauerkraut and meat buns, and she said she’s adding lazy lasagna. Solnik uses organic flour from Elie’s Prairie Flour Mills and Bothwell cheeses in her products.
“It’s all frozen but some items are baked already and just need to be heated.”
Solnik primarily uses Facebook to promote and sell her food items.
“I will deliver or customers can pick up. I like dealing with my customers.”
Success at the farmers’ market at Shelmerdine Garden Centre in Headingley this summer, along with interest expressed by Headingley Foods owner Valerie Connolly, prompted Solnik to agree to provide stock for Headingley Foods at 8515 Roblin Blvd.
Solnik said Connolly is very supportive of local entrepreneurs. “Having food in her store is great.”
“It’s been busy,” Solnik said, adding that she’s delivered four orders to the store in three weeks.
She said right now she’s not interested in expanding to try for distribution in larger stores as that involves more regulations and the ability to deliver larger quantities of products. She’s happy being able to use the time when her children are in school and some evenings to make her products.
